How the treatment works

doctor explaining a procedure

The procedure

You will be assessed first, and the ear wax removal procedure will be thoroughly explained. You will be shown the inside of the ear canals before and after the procedure, using a digital microscope on a screen.

Earwax removal is performed using a low-pressure vacuum unit. Wearing a "head loop" (a binocular microscope), I use gentle suction to carefully clean out the ear canal.

Your appointment should last around 30 minutes or less, depending on the blockage/stubbornness of the wax. This method does not use a syringe or water pressure machine.

Who will carry out the procedure

Your appointment will be carried out by myself, qualified micro-suction specialist Pras Fernando.

After qualifying from Anglia Ruskin University, I have gained over 6 years of experience within the audiology field as a Hearing Care Assistant, currently working within four private audiology clinics carrying out micro-suction earwax removal.

I also work in NHS audiology providing vital hearing care support. I pride myself on providing exceptional patient care.

Understanding earwax

Every individual will produce earwax within their lifetime, but some will produce more than others. This could be due to genetics, caused by trauma or due to individual health. Muscles in the ear canal should normally clear this naturally.

Symptoms to look out for

Sometimes ears cannot cleanse themselves; ear wax can build up until the canals are fully blocked, which can lead to:

  • Irritation
  • Pressure within the canal
  • Pain
  • Discomfort
  • Hearing loss

Symptoms could be caused by water getting into the ears, foreign bodies, cotton from earbuds getting stuck within the canal or domes from hearing aids if you are a hearing aid user.

If you suffer from tinnitus, this could be exaggerated by the blockage and some may find this to be a very traumatic experience. If you have any of the symptoms mentioned, it is advisable to get a consultation as soon as possible.

How to treat earwax

Will you need regular treatment?

Will you need regular treatment?

Treating wax with a few drops of oil periodically should help the wax to soften and make its own way out but if the wax has settled in the canals, then you might need to get this removed by using micro-suction.

It is advisable to use olive oil drops in the ears for a few days before the procedure to make sure that the wax is soft enough against the canal for it to be removed.

After earwax removal, it is good practice to have your ears checked at least once a year to access how quickly you produce wax and if you will need regular ear cleaning treatment.
